DNR's 2026-30 Strategic Plan
Washington’s public lands and waters are a treasure for the people of Washington and a great responsibility to safeguard. The health of our lands and the health of people are inextricably linked. How thoughtfully and sustainably we manage our lands has a direct impact on communities across the state. As the 17th Commissioner of Public Lands, it’s my honor to step into this agency’s legacy of environmental stewardship and to lead us forward with a renewed focus of sustainably managing our lands for all the people today, and for generations to come.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a vision for the future; a vision based on fulfilling our role as environmental stewards, protecting clean and healthy habitat, increasing access to recreation opportunities for all, bolstering our wildfire prevention and response efforts, and ensuring Environmental Justice and Tribal sovereignty are woven into everything we do.
None of this would be possible without the talented and passionate staff at DNR. We are fortunate to have nearly 2,200 outstanding public servants dedicated not only to this critical work, but also to bringing integrity, respect, professionalism, and joy with them every day as they serve the people of Washington.
-Commissioner Dave Upthegrove
