Commissioner Franz Visits Black Canyon Fire: Thanks First Responders, Calls for Caution and Vigilance

Commissioner Franz briefed the press on the Black Canyon and other active fires, met with local leaders, and pledged support for communities throughout the state dealing with wildfires

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz praised the work of firefighters and other first responders in a visit to the Black Canyon Fire outside Naches on Friday. The Black Canyon Fire has burned nearly 10,000 acres and is one of ten major fires burning in Washington right now.

“I am incredibly proud of and grateful for the work that our teams have done this week to get this fire under control,” said Commissioner Franz. “As more wildfires continue to burn elsewhere DNR crews, along with our local and federal partners, are working in every corner of our state, digging fire lines, removing dangerous fuels, and helping residents and communities protect their homes.

The fires across Washington have burned more than 80,000 acres. Fires in Oregon have consumed more than 800,000 acres. The hot, dry, and windy conditions that have driven much of the fire activity in the Pacific Northwest are expected to continue throughout the summer. While lighting strikes have been a factor, much like 2023 when more than 90% of Washington’s wildfires were caused by humans, a majority of this season’s fires can be attributed to humans.

“The Pacific Northwest is the hotspot for fires right now and resources are stretched. It’s why I asked the Governor to authorize the National Guard to assist with air resources,” Franz continued. “I am urging everyone to please do your part and be extremely safe out there. We have to remain cautious, considerate, and vigilant as we push further into this dry, hot summer.”
