The Sinlahekin Fire continues to burn on the landscape, creating a public safety hazard for recreators in the area.
The Washington Department of Natural Resources has implemented a full recreational closure of the Loomis State Forest due to the Sinlahekin Fire near Tonasket, Washington. The lightning-caused fire has been burning since July 26, 2026, and threatens recreation sites in the state forest.
The Sinlahekin Fire was last reported at 166,170 acres and 38% contained as of September 4, 2026. Recreation sites in the Loomis State Forest have been closed since the fire started to ensure recreator and firefighter safety. Hunting season, which begins in September, historically brings more recreators to Loomis State Forest. A full closure of the forest is necessary to maintain safety for the public and for ongoing firefighting operations in the area.
Other recreation opportunities on DNR-managed lands can be found at dnr.wa.gov/go. Please abide by all posted closures by DNR and other land managers.
Officials urge members of the public recreating outside to stay prepared during fire season, including by being alert to rapid environmental changes, checking restrictions and conditions before heading out, ensuring tow chains are properly secured and not dragging on pavement, and staying on established trails.
