South Puget Sound Region Recreation Information 
South Puget Sound Region location map 

The South Puget Sound Region offers many recreational sites in Grays Harbor, King, Pierce, Thurston, Kitsap, and Mason counties. Sites include trailheads and picnic areas for day use and campgrounds for overnight use.  South Puget Sound is the most diverse region in the state with a mix of rural and urban landscapes and large bodies of fresh and saltwater. Recreational opportunities are as diverse as is the landscape and include: hiking, mountain biking, 4x4 rock climbs, quad and bike trails, horseback trails, natural areas, paragliding, plus diving, boating, and other marine activities.

Capitol State Forest (Grays Harbor & Thurston Counties)

Recreation Information:

  • Camping outside of designated campsites is not allowed in Capitol State Forest
  • Maximum stay length at campgrounds is 10 days every 365 days
  • All trails are open to foot traffic year-round
  • Mountain bikes are allowed year-round on all trails except McLane Creek
  • Campgrounds and trailheads closed seasonally December 1 through April 30
  • Motorized Trails are closed seasonally December 1 though April 30
  • Non-Motorized Trails are closed to equestrian use December 1 though April 30

 

CAUTION! Timber harvest activities occur throughout the forest year-round.

ATTENTION: Trail systems in the Green Mountain State Forest are all multiple use trails. You will encounter two way traffic from other users, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, motorcycle and ATV riding. Please use the trails safely.
